It is jointly organized by the China Carbon Forum (CCF) and The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ). ‘Renewables in China – Challenges of Grid Access’ is the second event of the platform and was organized in special cooperation with the EU Delegation to China.

‘Renewables in China – Challenges of Grid Access’, the second event of the China Low Carbon Leadership Network, sought to engage stakeholders in the energy sector in a discussion on the barriers to integrating renewables into the Chinese grid. The three panelists present, including Professor Hu Zhaoguang, Vice Principal of the State Grid Energy Research Institute, and Mr. Sebastian Meyer, Director of Research and Advisory at Azure International, discussed the present state of renewable energy development in China, challenges facing renewables integration into the grid, and suggestions for overcoming these barriers. Around 90 experts, professionals, and Chinese government officials in the climate change sector participated in the event, including four senior panelists: Mr. Gao Guangsheng, Director General of NDRC Climate Change Department; Mr. Norbert Gorissen, Head of the Environment Division for the German Federal Ministry; Professor Zou Ji, professor at Renmin University and Country Director of the World Resource Institute; and Mr. Jonathan Watts, Asia Environment Correspondent from The Guardian. Over 50 participants attended this event exploring the impact of implementing a carbon tax vs. a cap-and-trade scheme in China for reducing carbon emissions. Featured speakers were Professor Pan Jiahua, Director General of the Institute of Urban and Environmental Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Mr. Frank Joshua, CEO of China Carbon Corporation; and Mr. Mei Dewen, General Manager of CBEEX. Over 90 participants attended ‘Back from Copenhagen: Stories from Various Stakeholders’ on January 21, 2010. The event featured six speakers who attended UNFCCC COP15. Through personal anecdotes and technical discussions, the speakers spoke of their experiences negotiating and observing at COP15. They captured the frenzy, highlighted the outcomes, and offered their own analyses regarding the role that China played at the talks. This roundtable event brought together stakeholders from the PRC coal sector. The purpose was to inform Chinese government climate officials and negotiators about the significant carbon abatement potential in China’s coal sector, to explore technological options and strategies for realizing this potential, to dicuss obstacles to the deployment of these technological solutions as well as how such obstacles might be overcome, and to discuss global financing mechanisms pot 2012 that can help support accelerated roll out of these technologies.

This roundtable was limited to around 30 participants, among which were leading international coal sector experts and business as well as senior Chinese government officials and climate negotiators. This event launched the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)’s Carbon Markets report for China, featuring a presentation of key messages from the report by one of its authors, Mr. Fulvio Bartolucci. Additionally, the recently launched China Beijing Environmental Exchange (CBEEX) was introduced, featuring a presentation by its president Mr. Mei Dewen.

The event was co-organised by CCF and CBEEX, hosted by CBEEX, and sponsored by Allianz and WWF.
